What kind of atmosphere do you like at a recording session? Do you prefer to just walk in, do the job with a minimal amount of direction and move on or do you prefer a session where there's discussion and a process takes place to get to the final product? Have you ever had a session where you arrived, they gave you a basic idea of the voice/character and you did the job with little or no direction?
Thank you. |

Ideally, a session is purposeful playtime: Unhurried, creatively enthusiastic, and serious fun! Should feel like all the players are co-directing their roles, with everyone working together to push the boundaries of performance possibilities to create a satisfying soundtrack. I'm not fond of "efficient" sessions, where it's a race against the clock to "just get the words out and move on"; and of course no performer likes to be "micro-directed" to exhaustion, either. I do like sessions that allow traditional "table read" time, but that only helps if the script is more of a contiguous Radio Play - disjointed bits of dialogue might as well be individually cued and recorded "on the fly".
It's good to have clear direction that welcomes a little creative inspiration, but unlimited freedom can become a tiresome jumble of inappropriate cleverness that drags on for hours, only to be trimmed down to the bones of the script in the end, to keep scenes from meandering off course into pure self-indulgence. There have been many jobs with practically no direction; which is perfectly fine if it's a matter of brilliant material and casting, which allows a script to pretty much "perform itself" instinctively. Not so good if the director just doesn't care enough to reach for higher than "good'nuff" quality standards. |
