We all need to start somewhere, taking on jobs that aren't the most prestigious, or are even somewhat embarrassing from a quality perspective, with low-to-no pay. Are there red-flags which you notice which communicate to you "this person ain't goin' anywhere fast"? What seems to be the defining factors/choices which separate the talents which climb out of B-grade material, and the ones who get stuck as 'cheap labor'?

So long as the writing is decent, and you're given the opportunity to perform an actual character (not just an obnoxious voice distortion), low-budget or amateur-grade film productions can turn out to be delightfully creative bits of entertainment. I even prefer some "cheap" productions over a lot of mindless major studio crap, and am proud to be associated with several low-to-no budget pieces that came out well.

It's when everything one can associate with a voice actor or announcer wreaks of unsophisticated local/smalltime media "hoke", and unjustifiably inflated ego in writing and presentation, that you get into trouble. Badly-done video sales pitches for questionable goods & services, or local retail merchant/service commercials that relentlessly annoy radio/TV listeners around the clock are probably the deadliest of dead-end gigs for any performer. "I'm gonna get me some o'them spacial 2-fer-1 vittles dealies Riiight Naaaaow! Yummm-Mmmmee!" (I think not!)

Basically, just beware of anything that shouts corny slogans and repeats prices and street addresses over and over, or promotes sleazy individuals, corrupt businesses and rip-off real estate schemes, and you should be fine. Otherwise, so long as a project gives you an opportunity to perform well and entertain (even if the production, as a whole, doesn't come off very well), it's worth the risk and effort. After all, almost nobody starts off working in a string of top-flight productions: The best careers grow from humble beginnings.
