The Mel Blanc Story: http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/aod/networks/radio4/aod.shtml?radio4/thatsallfolks_melblancstory#

It starts about a minute in.

Thanks Tom I'll post this around...

I remember as a kid here in L.A. seeing a lot of Mel being interviewed on local stations, KTTV 11 did a lot of such interviews.

What I don't like about it is that Jimmy Hibbert tries to make himself part of the story at times and even compares himself to Mr. Blanc. AS IF!

Yeah I was like, "Is this an audition? What the heck is he doing?"

Another odd part is how Mel explained his X-ray and the comparison of Enrico Caruso throat muscles. How in the world did that particular Doctor know what Caruso's throat muscles look like? And by X-ray no less! 'Must have been some incredible imaging on behalf of both radiologist.
Don't want to bash on Mel but it sounded like one of his, uum... stories.

"Oh yeah, one day my doctor told me I have the same muscle structure in my writing hand as Shakespeare" Ah yeah.... thanks Doc, I think we all do! Crap

This video is bizarre by a lot of people's standards.

That part was indeed quite cringe-worthy.

I've found with expose's on voice actors, there's almost always a clambering on the anchors part to be associated in 'the big boy's club' or will cover up any apparent envy by 'laughing with' or 'jiving' about "what a silly job you guys have... but I'm really quite content with my dignified news position... no really... I am... honestly.. stop looking at me like that.."

While undeniably brilliant in his vocal virtuosity, Mr. Blanc was known to... Let's say embellish his life story, to the point of near "whole cloth" marketing hype, in the fashion of the classic vaudeville performers he came up with. So I'd advise taking the proverbial "grain of salt" (maybe 5, actually) when listening to any of his "historic" Showbiz Tales. Eyes would invariably roll whenever those who knew him well were confronted with some of his rather entertaining (verging on "fantastical") self-promoting quotes, which have been repeated and re-published over the years to now take on the veneer of "established fact" - most of which, sorry to say, just ain't so.

Corey, what do you think of people like Jimmy Hibbert, who obviously in the piece tried to compare himself with Mr. Blanc? Either Mr. Hibbert believes greatly in his talent or he is quite naive!

Unfortunately, the links have elapsed since they were posted; but I wouldn't be too hard on any self-respecting "presenter" for - in some way - attempting to elevate their own personality and talents onto the same "playing field" as the artist they are interviewing - lest they come off as an embarrassing kind of fawning sycophant, instead of the masterful host of the conversation. I think we all squirm a bit, watching or listening to an overly self-effacing "I am not Worthy to be in your Miraculous Presence" interviewer (major-brand Ice Tea, anyone?).

...But then again, nobody wants to witness a clumsy attempt at "Me, Too!" performance or self-congratulatory personal references from an interviewer, either. There certainly are plenty of TV and Radio host personalities who justify a somewhat delusional sense of their own talent and importance through the reinforcement of their own flattering fanbases and personal "entourage", who are always cheerfully willing to "prop them up" in the eyes of the Public. (Somehow, I'm reminded of Kevin Spacey's "sensational" Johnny Carson imitation. ...<not!>)

At any rate, it's never a good idea to interject one's own performance "talents" while interviewing a Performer (legendary or otherwise), as the Guest on a conversational programme like that. Bound to cause at least a moment of "oh, noooo" discomfort for the subject and audience alike.
