Peter Bergman, one of the founding members of Firesign Theatre, has passed away at the age of 72. Any thoughts or comments on Mr. Bergman and Firesign Theatre?

Firesign Theater has certainly been a major inspiration to me; having proved that "Radio Theatre" could be made not only entirely relevant to generations well-past the "Golden Age" years, but even more inventive and "cutting edge" as a thoroughly involving and indelibly memorable form of entertainment. While he may not have been the strongest Voice Man in the group, Peter Bergman's brash characterizations seem to tie all the disparate vocal/performance styles together in a unique way that truly transformed the malleable cast into "The Firesign Theater". I haven't yet been in touch with Phil Proctor (who I've been privileged to now know as a real pal in this business), but I'm sure it must be a devastating loss to all the guys - and can't imagine how they'll be able to generate their iconic spoken-word alchemy as a brand-name entity anymore, without his distinctive and unmistakably madcap vocal stylings.
We're all Bozos on this Bus. Only now our shoes have been suddenly and irrevocably deflated. Let's all "give The Wheeze a squeeze" for the singularly distinctive comedic instigator of "Avante-Garde LP Comedy", Peter Bergman. <Honk-a-Honk-aa!> |
