How much do you know about a session before you arrive? Do you know who you're working with/for (actors and production) and what the script and characters look like?

Thank you.

It varies wildly; even within the same projects and series. Sometimes you're inundated with a load of irrelevant material (I've been sent major metropolitan phonebook-sized stacks of entire production storyboard xeroxes - for a couple of bit parts) and unnecessary logistical/travel data, yet missing the details that actually define the assignment's tasks and whats or who-withs of the working environment. Other times, especially in recent years, all you'll get is a production company name and place to show up; having to push agents for basic clues on title and character names (or rough description) - and be expected to "wing it" when you get there. A feast or famine of information - but usually somewhere in between.

I suspect a lot of the confusion comes from the two distinctly different categories of performer: A traditional Radio Actor/VO person would have to be ready for anything at the drop of a hat; whereas traditional Stage and Screen Actors are accustomed to having materials to study and rehearse with far in advance of their filmed/recorded performances. And then there are just a lot of overworked or inexperienced agency and production people charged with carrying out all those talent arrangement responsibilities these days, with several shifting links in communication to follow through with. Somehow, though, it usually all comes together well enough in the end.
