When there's no background music - and the dialogue track suddenly goes silent.
This just in from my esteemed longtime VO colleague Brian Cummings:Quote: I just got back from out of town last night. As I was coming down the hill into Santa Clarita, Juliette called with the sad news about Big Mike Sommer. She had no details other than to tell me that Mike had suddenly passed, so I tried to see if anything was posted this AM but to no avail. All I know is that his hearty laugh and positive supportive presence was both unique and valued by all of us who knew him. I knew he had been dealing with the slow economy but occasionally would come out to work out with us anyway. He lifted the spirits of all of us in class and made the work better with his valued contribution.
It's always hard to say "goodbye" to good friends. And if you had the good fortune to know him, it was impossible not to like Mikey. I join you in my sadness for his passing and will send my sympathy to his family and other friends. But even as we find out more of the circumstances of Mike's passing, we'll still warmly remember the big guy and always value his friendship.
BCgs We never physically met or spoke personally, but I will sorely miss his boldly enthusiastic contributions to our message board conversation, and the uncommonly kind and generous spirit that came through loud and clear in our non-public correspondence over the past several years. At least his technical knowhow and compellingly bright observations will remain here for new visitors to enjoy and learn from in perpetuity. I only wish there was some stoutheartedly mischievous way to honor his loyal and genuine presence…
Maybe declare that forevermore, the proper shorthand for "microphone" should be "mike". Or is that simply too generic, for such a uniquely original individual…
Farewell, good pal. You'll not be forgotten. |

Sudden and sad news to be sure. We are now short a "Sommer". No doubt the better half as well. Mike's enthusiasm for the crafts was more than evident in his postings. Always entertaining and informative.
Corey, given Mike's knowledge of the business hardware, I wholeheartedly support your proposed tribute. A bold face "mike" for all to see.
"What sort of mike did they use on that project?"
"I am considering buying a new mike, do you have any suggestions?"
...and on it goes.
May I too offer my condolences to those who were close to Mike. It is my hope that he has found peace. |
