Through your candid remarks here on this message board, and to your own personal friends and acquaintances, did you ever find a curt opinion of yours about another performer to get back to them, who then confronted you about it? Is there any way to get out of such an awkward situation while still maintaining your integrity (read: without lying through your teeth)? "What? No! It must have been someone else. I love your work!"

I can't say that's ever happened to me (at least no one has ever confronted me with a grievance over something negative I may have expressed towards them or their work). Hearing so much "bad-mouthing" and bitterly resentful "slams" of fellow performers over the years does make one especially conscientious of the possibilities to find oneself in a "gossip war" within the fairly small community of this business; so even in candid remarks, I always try to be fair-minded (or at least extremely cautious about who I may confide in when expressing an "off the record" negative opinion or judgment, that could later "come back to bite me"). Because we all eventually find ourselves face-to-face with nearly everyone in the business (if you manage to stick around long enough), the old saying: "If you can't say somethin' nice..." does indeed rank among the wisest of an actor's "words to live by".

Along those same lines, there was once a comment posted on the previous version of this message board from a relative of comic/voice actor Lennie Weinrib upon his passing, extolling the talents and generosity of the man; while I had been less-than-charitable in my assessment of the voice characterizations he'd performed over the course of his varied career. ...But merely lamenting the performer's insufficient dedication to craftsmanship and taste to have left a great character voice legacy behind was not, and wasn't taken as, personally disparaging towards him as a talent or human being; being more of an admonition to those who might likewise slack-off on their responsibility to always maintain top-quality work standards, if they wish to distinguish themselves in this profession during - and beyond - their active years at the microphone.

While it is probably even more difficult for performers and artists to keep their opinions to themselves (or at least "confidential") than it is for most folks, another old saying may be best to keep in mind: "What goes around - comes around!". ...And so it goes.
